This course provides essential skills for the safe operation of a standard boiler, meeting high-risk work licensing requirements under WHS Regulations. Participants will learn boiler start-up, monitoring, shutdown, storage, and inspection procedures, focusing on single-fuel boilers without advanced components like superheaters or economisers. The course covers operational risk management, safety protocols, and adherence to national standards, ensuring only certified personnel operate or maintain standard boilers.
Advanced boiler operation training for boilers with superheaters, economisers, or multi-fuel capability. Builds on MSMBLIC001 foundation, covering complex system controls, advanced safety procedures, and operational optimisation. Required for HRW licence Class B operators handling industrial-scale steam systems.
Turbine operation HRW licence training. Covers principles of turbine plant operation, safety isolation, monitoring control systems, and emergency response procedures. Pathway for steam turbine operators in power generation and industrial process facilities.
Working around live high voltage switchgear leaves no room for guesswork. This nationally recognised Skill Set builds the practical, hands-on ability to operate local HV switchgear and carry out switching against an approved switching program, so the people on site can make the right call under real conditions. Participants come away with a solid grip on HV switchgear operation, correct switching procedure, workplace safety requirements and the operational risk thinking that keeps a site running safely. On successful completion, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. Note that employer, site and jurisdictional authorisation requirements may also apply before an operator is signed off to switch independently.
Every piece of cord connected electrical equipment on a site needs to be checked, and this course gets people ready to do exactly that. This nationally recognised Skill Set covers the practical skills and knowledge needed to carry out in service safety testing of electrical cord connected equipment and cord assemblies using the appropriate testing equipment. It suits maintenance technicians, facilities and workshop personnel, safety staff, equipment custodians, non electrical trades and anyone else who ends up responsible for portable electrical equipment testing. No previous electrical trade experience is needed. Successful participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and, where applicable, an O’Brien digital ID card showing their certificate number.
Type B gas appliances and industrial combustion equipment call for a deeper level of technical know how, and this specialist course is built around that reality. Participants develop the practical skills and knowledge required to install, commission and service this equipment to a professional standard. It is suited to appropriately experienced gas fitters, boiler and burner technicians, combustion technicians, commissioning personnel and industrial maintenance professionals who meet the prerequisite requirements. Successful participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. Worth noting, completion of this course does not automatically grant a gasfitting licence, registration or authority to independently carry out Type B gasfitting work.

Inspection frequency depends on pressure class and jurisdiction. Australian standards typically require an external inspection every 2 years and an internal inspection every 4 years for Class B boilers. Daily operator checks, plus weekly maintenance, are standard practice for safe operation.
A “boiler ticket” is the everyday name for a High Risk Work (HRW) licence to operate a boiler. In Australia the licence is issued by your state or territory work health and safety regulator, such as WorkSafe Victoria, not by the training provider. There are three relevant classes: standard boiler operation (BS), advanced boiler operation (BA) and turbine operation (TO). To obtain one you complete the nationally recognised unit for that class with a Registered Training Organisation, for example MSMBLIC001 for a standard boiler or MSMBLIC002 for an advanced boiler, pass the written and practical assessment with an accredited assessor, then apply to the regulator with proof of identity and your assessment result. The licence is valid for five years and is recognised in every Australian state and territory. O’Brien delivers the training and assessment as RTO 45484; the regulator issues the ticket.
In most cases, yes. Under Victoria’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, a person who operates a boiler that requires an attendant must hold a High Risk Work licence in the matching class, standard boiler (BS) or advanced boiler (BA), issued by WorkSafe Victoria. The same rule applies in the other states and territories under their work health and safety regulations. The main exception is a boiler plant that has been designed, installed and operated to AS2593 as an unattended or limited-attendance boiler; that plant does not need a licensed operator present at all times, but the people responsible for it still need documented training in the standard and in the site procedures. If you are unsure which category your plant falls into, the boiler’s design registration documents and your regulator will confirm it, and our training team can advise which course applies.
