Oilon ChillHeat industrial heat pumps, engineered and serviced in Australia by O’Brien Energy

Built in Finland by Oilon. Family owned since 1961.

Make your process hot water from heat your refrigeration already throws away

If your plant pays to cool product and pays again to heat water for washdown and CIP, you’re buying energy twice. Oilon ChillHeat industrial heat pumps recover that heat and lift it to the temperature your line runs at, up to 120°C with the P Series. O’Brien Energy designs the system and stays on to service it.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Paying for heat twice? Plenty of food plants are.

Tick any that sound like your site.

  • The boiler burns gas all shift for washdown and CIP.
  • Your refrigeration condensers dump warm air out the back of the building.
  • Your last gas contract renewal hurt.
  • A big customer has asked for your emissions numbers.

That warm air is energy you already paid for. You bought the electricity to run the compressors, and the heat leaves the site for nothing.

The gas side isn’t getting easier. AEMO says southern gas production is falling faster than demand. Longford, which has historically supplied about two thirds of east coast gas, is due to retire at the end of 2033.

One machine. Two jobs.

An Oilon ChillHeat heat pump sits between those two problems. It pulls heat out of your cooling circuit, which takes load off your refrigeration, then lifts it into hot water at the temperature your process needs. Your boiler stays for steam and peaks.

Not sure? If your site runs refrigeration or process cooling and uses hot water, it’s worth a look.

Get your hot water off gas and keep the boiler for the jobs that need steam

  • Hot water and chilled water from one machine

Run the heat pump on your process cooling and it heats and cools in the same cycle. That’s where heat pumps reach their best efficiency.

  • Built for the temperatures your line actually uses

Washdown and CIP water usually run well under 100°C. The S Series covers up to 85°C, or 90°C on the S600B to S1000B. The P Series goes to 120°C.

  • Start with one duty and grow from there

Units connect in series or parallel, so the system can match your site today and expand later. Several units also give you redundancy.

  • Problems spotted before they stop production

Oilon Global Monitor watches the system in the cloud, so engineers can troubleshoot remotely and cut unplanned downtime.

  • Talks to the controls you already run

Modbus RTU comes standard. Modbus TCP, Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP and BACnet are available as options.

  • Refrigerants chosen for the long haul

Options go as low as GWP 1.37 with R1234ze(E). The 120°C units run R1233zd(E), GWP 3.88, safety class A1.

Questions plant engineers ask us

Do we have to get rid of our boiler?

Usually not. The common approach is to move the hot water duties onto the heat pump first and keep the boiler for steam and peak loads. Your assessment shows where that line sits for your plant.

How hot can it go?

Up to 120°C with the P Series running refrigerant R1233zd(E). The S Series goes to 85°C, or 90°C on the S600B to S1000B. Final temperatures depend on your site conditions.

What makes a good heat source?

Anything that rejects steady, warm heat. Refrigeration condensers, process cooling water, wastewater and flue gas are all candidates. The warmer and steadier the source, the better the efficiency.

How efficient is it?

Heat pumps typically deliver 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity. Use the heating and cooling together and the number climbs. Oilon’s distillery project in Ireland runs at a total system COP of 6.5.

Are the refrigerants safe?

R1233zd(E), used for 120°C, is safety class A1, which means non flammable. R1234ze(E) is class A2L, mildly flammable, and Oilon offers a ventilated enclosure and gas detection for it.

Is there funding?

Sometimes. Programs open and close, and eligibility depends on your site. State schemes such as the NSW Energy Savings Scheme and Victorian Energy Upgrades may apply to some heat pump projects. We check what’s open when we assess your plant and can manage the application.

What does it cost?

It depends on your loads and temperatures, and on how much existing pipework we can use. The site assessment gives you a real number and a payback period before you commit to anything.

Who services it?

O’Brien Energy, from branches in VIC, NSW, QLD and WA. The system can also be monitored remotely through Oilon Global Monitor.
